Before the predicted date, the cult members were secretive — they refused media contact, rejected visitors, and made no effort to recruit new believers. Their certainty was sufficient; they didn't need social validation.
Then midnight passed. No flood. No spaceship. No apocalypse. The group spiraled toward dissolution as physical reality contradicted everything they'd staked their identity on. But within hours, Keech received a new "message" explaining that the group's faithful vigil had saved the world. Within minutes, the cult reversed entirely: calling newspapers, seeking publicity, proselytizing every visitor, desperately trying to recruit new members.
The mechanism was social proof deployed as a psychological survival strategy. The physical evidence was undeniable — no flood occurred. So the only way to sustain the belief was to replace physical evidence with social evidence: "If enough people believe we saved the world, then we saved the world." The disconfirmation didn't weaken commitment; it intensified it — because the greater the investment in the belief (quitting jobs, selling homes, severing relationships), the more psychologically devastating it would be to accept that the investment was wasted.
